Success through Branding and Social Media

Posted by Jessica Sadoway On August - 9 - 2010

The number one thing I’ve learned about how the internet has changed our world is simple:

Other people are not untouchable.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always had the idea in my head that people in the news and on the internet are all far away. They’re like phantoms or not-quite-real characters in the world of current events. I don’t know them personally, and barring some strange twist of fate, I probably never will.

In this world of digital connectivity, that couldn’t be further from the truth!

If the digital revolution has done anything, it has made everyone real and accessible. From international icons to local professionals, interaction is easier than ever. It’s a world of possibilities, where one new contact, one new idea, could change the course of your career or business.

A fantastic resource for anyone thinking about publishing.

I heard about a cool new start-up company through one of my email feeds this morning, so I sent an email to the founder telling her who I am and asking her to keep me in mind for future collaborations.

I went to a seminar on social media and chatted with the speaker afterward. We now keep in touch through social media, and he promised to answer any questions I have as I start up my newest blog.

I’m reading a book about the publishing industry and it has several chapters about connecting with authors you like. He mentions that authors are usually flattered and more than willing to help out fellow writers. It can lead to valuable endorsements and even mentorships.

You just have to ask!

Even if it’s just to ask a question or introduce yourself, getting in touch is no longer a daunting task or a taboo practice. It’s welcomed and expected! Building a community is all about people helping other people.

So don’t confine yourself to a corner because you’re afraid you’ll be intruding on some superstar’s privacy. They started out where you are, too. The worst that can happen is you’ll get no response, which only means the other person has lost the opportunity to connect with someone valuable — you.

Thanks for attending, Jessica. And yes, feel free to shoot questions my way!

  2. I think you’ve got it! So many people tell me that they don’t understand how business is enhanced by using social media. Once I got that it is about ‘connecting’ with people by asking questions, responding to posts, and sharing info with others, I started to see results.

Love your last paragraph. It really is all about connecting with others.

Thank you! Great to connect with you, too. Yet another connection made through social media that would probably not have happened otherwise.
